DON'T JUDGE THINGS BY THEIR FACE VALUE❗❗ _____________________ Often times people will think that specific training techniques or diet techniques will bring about specific results. They may well help. But they are not always the CAUSE. What do I mean? Causation and correlation are two different things. Eating chicken does not neccessarily equal muscle growth though many people may eat it and build muscle. Protein is the cause which chicken will give us. That's why Vegans can still build muscle without eating chicken. Certain "burnout sets" are not going to cause muscle though many muscular might think that that's what has helped them, instead their muscle growth most likely has come from progressively adding more weight to the bar and lifting a good number of overall sets of reps. You get the point. _____________________ Don't conflate causation with correlation and don't judge things by their face value. Rather, we must look at the science behind them to truly see what brings about the results 💪💯.
These are my favourite digestive enzymes. It's gentle and contains no HCL (hydrochloric acid) which can really upset some people's stomach. It's one thing to eat healthy but if you are not able to actually digest it then you will not be absorbing nutrients. You will struggle to heal from inflammation and malnutrition. WHAT IS MUSCLE HYPERTROPHY❓ _____________________ Hypertrophy. Pronounced as HIGH-PER-TRU-FEE. Sounds like a fancy word, but don't worry, it's not so complicated, I got you covered. Read on👇. _____________________ Muscle hypertrophy, or often just 'hypertrophy', is another way of saying muscle growth. So if you're trying to grow more muscle, then your goal is to increase 'hypertrophy.' No need to get more fancy than that. But if you do want to get a little more technical, then once again I have got you covered. Read on again 😊👇. _____________________ Muscle tissue is made up of 3 components: 1) Water - makes up 60% to 80% of muscle tissue in weight 2) Glycogen (form of stored carbohydrate) - makes up ~0% to 5% of muscle tissue in weight 3) Protein - makes up about 20% of muscle tissue in weight Therefore, to increase muscle hypertrophy you need to increase the amount of water, glycogen, and/or protein in a muscle cell. How to do so, read on one more time 😊😊👇. _____________________ There are 2 types of muscle hypertrophy: 1) Myofibrillar hypertrophy - an increase in the amount of protein contained in individual muscle cells. 2) Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy - an increase in the volume of the fluid and non-contractile components of the muscle (glycogen, water, etc.) Some say that certain training techniques emphasise each type of hypertrophy and that certain muscle fibers should be trained in certain ways. There is some truth to such claims, but I don't want to open the floor up for that debate now because honestly, muscle hypertrophy can be one of the most complex topics and since this is just an Instagram post, not a book, I don't want to jumble up complex topics all in one small space and make things more confusing, so I'll leave you with this: If you consistently weight train with an emphasis on heavy, compound lifts; you eat in a slight calorie surplus; follow a high protein diet and get sufficient rest, then you will successfully stimulate myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. 💪✌
WHAT IS PROGRESSIVE TENSION OVERLOAD❓ _____________________ Chances are you’ve heard me speak about progressive tension overload, (or progressive overload) a number of times, because indeed I mention it all the time. So let me take the time out to explain what is actually is. Read on👇. _____________________ Progressive tension overload refers to increasing tension level in muscle fibers over time. That is, adding more resistance to your muscles over time. This can take place by adding more reps to your exercises, by increasing “time under tension”, or the best way 👉 to add more weight to your exercises over time. I say this is the best way for a number of reasons: for one, it’s the most feasible, e.g. how many reps are you gonna realistically keep on adding to your exercise before moving up weight? and in the case of time under tension, how many seconds are you going to delay your sets by? Whereas when it comes to adding weight to the bar, so long as you maintain form, you move up weight each time you hit the top of a rep range, e.g. if you’re squatting in the 4-6 rep range and you manage 6 good reps with a certain weight, you move up weight (by around 5kg). _____________________ Why do I always mention progressive tension overload? Because it is the most important mechanism for building muscle. This has been demonstrated by a number of studies, such as this one that found progressive tension overload was more important than tiring your muscles till failure. * (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/128681/) _____________________ Bottom line: progressive tension overload is the most important thing you should be focusing on in your training. Whilst maintaining good form, aim to add weight to the bar over time once you hit the top of your rep range(s). You can implement all the different fancy weightlifting techniques in the world, but if you fail to progressively overload your muscles, your results will pay the price.

Whilst there can be such rare cases, when it comes to the main foundations and principles, there are already tried and tested methods that will work or won't. So whilst you can feel free to try new things here and there, don't fall to the extreme where you ignore all the scientific studies, because the whole point that such studies are conducted, is to avoid having you go through all the trial and errors. SUPERSETS 101 _____________________ Today I cover what a superset is, whether or not it helps you build more muscle, and how best you can use them. Read on. 👇 _____________________ Firstly, what is a superset? A superset is a weightlifting technique where you perform two exercises back-to-back, with little or no rest in between them. This can be done by performing exercises that target the same muscle group back-to-back, e.g. supersetting deadlifts with rows (both target the back) or it can be by performing exercises that target different muscle groups e.g. supersetting squats with bench presses (the former targeting the legs and the latter the chest). Some may opt for an even more detailed way of supersetting, that by supersetting antagonistic muscle groups with each other (opposite muscle groups), e.g. supersetting bicep curls with tricep extensions (biceps and triceps are antagonistic muscles - when the biceps works to flex the elbow, the triceps extend the elbow). _____________________ Why use supersets? Supersets can be useful for (1) saving you time in your workouts and (2) ending your workouts with an extra "pump". By "pump", I am referring to sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, which is a type of muscle growth that increases the volume of the fluid, non-contractile components of the muscle.  However, supersets don't neccessarily help you build more muscle. Read this carefully. I am NOT saying that they "don't work", what I am saying is this: as long as your overall volume, intensity and frequency is on point, utilising supersets will not add more to your muscle growth. There are various studies to prove this as well, such as one carried out by scientists at Kennesaw State University and published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research that compared the changes in testosterone levels between people who did supersets versus traditional sets. It was found that the group that rested less in between sets gained significantly less muscle than the group that rested more.  Why you may ask? Because if you overdo your supersets by cutting rest periods very short, then you lose ability to perform at your best and progressively overload your muscl
Funny Improv is not inherently good, but good Improv is inherently funny. #theimprovhabit ◾ I'm debunking what i believe to be the largest myth about Improv: that you have to be funny to do it. I'm sure I'll come back to this a lot. ◾ Our culture has conditioned us to believe that Improv is all about making people laugh. Most people never get involved with this craft because they don't believe they are comedic enough to do it. This is understandable, but comes from a misconception. ◾ Improv is about living in the moment, being honest, and reacting truthfully. When you begin to trust yourself and stay honest to the ideas that flow to your head, that's when an audience becomes engaged! Skilled improvisers may know what people will find funny, but rarely are they "trying" to make people laugh. ◾ Laughter isn't a measure of audience interest. You can't hear people on the edge of their seat. You cant hear wide eyed interest. You can hear tears rolling down a cheek. These things only come when you stop trying to be LIKE something, and start to be authentic to yourself and the situation at hand. Trying to be funny will only yield two options: being funny or not being funny. Why limit the infinite possibilities that could occur? Everyone puts limits like these on themselves, and we deserve to be free of those restricting mindsets. ◾ What we deserve to reclaim for ourselves is the reminder that YOU ARE ENOUGH! When we stop worrying about making the audience (or people) feel a certain way, we can direct that energy to ourselves and our partners, and discover together what we genuinely want to explore. We owe it to ourselves to live our truth, and not some image of what we think our truth should look like. ◾ Working from a place of curiousity makes everything that comes after it honest, and puts what's most important at the center, YOU. Now you can take the time to indulge in your creative impulses (remember that you DO have them) alongside a team that's doing the same, constantly solving the question, "If this is true, what else is true?" If you don't live your truth, no one else will ever learn from it. ◾ What are you curious about right now?
This man, @matt.crosslift is one of the few people I’ve met throughout my life to be so passionate and dedicated to what they’re doing. I’ve been going to the gym for about an year now, with a couple of breaks of 1-2 months, and even though I had the feeling I was giving my best, researching workouts and starving myself to get rid of all that belly fat, still the results were far from satisfying. The New Year is coming around, and that means that many fitness resolutions will be set, but unfortunately, most will not be met. People are at their most vulnerable state going into the New Years after gaining weight over the holidays, and that means “fitness influencers” are out on the look out. WARNING - Instagram ads, Facebook ads and the whole lot will be popping on your screens promising you that “this will finally be the year that you get the body of your dreams” and “just take this body quiz to find out your body type” and so forth. BE CAREFUL. _____________________ Now I am not saying that selling courses and programs is a bad thing, it’s a good thing. IF IT DELIVERS. But most don’t. In fact, here is a heads-up on how to know if the “influencer” that pops up on your screen is full of sh*t: 1. If they talk about “detoxing” or giving your system a nice “reset” going into the New Years (your body does that naturally) 2. If they mention any kind of “weight loss teas” or “tablets” (as Khabib would say, such products are “number one bullshit”) 3. If they talk about a “new groundbreaking diet” (no FAD diet will deliver long-term results) 4. If they promise you new methods on how to “shock” or “confuse” your muscles (your muscles have no cognitive ability) 5. If they use the term “New Year New You” (🤦🏻♂️) And much, much, much more! I will stop there only cos I don’t want to make this take an hour to read :) _____________________ To conclude: Be wary of people who try to sell you all types of fitness plans and programs. If you do want to put your hard-earned money into one though, then just make sure it’s from someone who actually knows their stuff, i.e. he/she uses real evidence and case studies to back up what they say. WHY TIME UNDER TENSION IS OVERRATED‼️ _____________________ Time under tension is the time you take to complete a set, e.g. if you take 45 seconds on a set of bicep curls, your time under tension is 45 seconds. Many fitness guys claim that increasing time under tension leads to greater muscle growth, and that this method can replace heavy lifting. BULL SH*T! _____________________ Using their logic, someone who lifts 100kg Barbell Squat for example, shouldn’t bother adding weight to that squat, but rather slow down the time it takes to travel up and down, from 5 to 10 seconds to 1 minute etc. Clearly, such an idea is not feasible, but most importantly, science points otherwise. For instance, a study conducted by scientists at the University of Sydney found that traditional “fast” training on the Bench Press gained more strength than slower training.  Also, a study conducted by scientists at the University of Wisconsin found that even in untrained individuals a traditional training tempo resulted in greater strength in the squat and greater peak power in the counter movement jump.  Other studies such as this,  and this,  further highlight this point. In losing strength by applying time under tension, muscle growth is not going to be more effective because you sacrifice the primary driver of muscle growth in progressive overload, specifically, lifting heavier weights over time.  Slowing down your tempo also would result in a loss of reps for your exercise.  _____________________ Bottom line: ignore time under tension. We're often told to close our eyes and imagine ourselves at our "dream physique". To picture what we'd look like and how good we'd feel, in an attempt to motivate ourselves, to get us all pumped up for making it a reality. Then we open our eyes, and we feel some ambition running through our veins, but then it dies soon after. It dies after a couple of workouts have been completed and a few healthy meals have been forced down our throats. It dies that moment that we face difficulty and hardship. In truth, the method fails even before that, it fails from the get-go. When you see yourself as getting into good shape as a distant "dream" you already set yourself up for failure. Fitness is hard, no doubt. But it's not rocket science or brain surgery. With a good level of dedication, and desire, it can be done. It is not something that you should look at as a distant "dream" because that implies that it's out of your hands, but that's not how it has to be. _____________________ So I suggest we try a different method. Close your eyes and picture yourself 20 years from now - overweight, diagnosed with diabetes and high cholesterol; you're unable to provide the best experiences for your children, and your expected to die years before the average life expectancy. Does that thought bother you? Does that scare you? Cos that is a reality for many, and if we don't get our act together we can face the same fate. Imagine if you never take the necessary action so suffer the rest of your life when it's too late to make amends. Open your eyes. If that doesn't wake you up then I don't know what will. That better get you working because not much else will. And even if you don't make it to the top of the mountain, at least you know that you tried. That is acceptable, but inaction is not and never will be. #TakeAction 💪

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU TEST YOUR ONE REP MAX❓ _____________________ Following my recent post, I thought it is important to go over how often you should check your One Rep Max. Let’s get right to the point. _____________________ Firstly, if you are in your 1st year of lifting, do NOT bother testing your One Rep Max. It would do you much more benefit to stick to your normal routine and constant checking will just slow down your actual potential on both strength and muscle growth. Also, it can be dangerous given that form might not be the greatest at this stage of your lifting career, even if you think it is. I’ve seen too many new lifters boast about their 200kg Deadlift One Rep Max but their backs look close to snapping in half. _____________________ If you have been lifting for 2 years plus, and you have built the foundations, then I recommend you test your One Rep Max around every 6 weeks. Not only will this show you your progress and boost your motivation levels, but it will actually help with getting your strength up. With your 1st year of lifting, it’s quite easy to move up in weight on your exercises, but the longer you start to lift the harder it becomes, so testing your One Rep Max can fit in nicely with periodisation (DM me if you want more info on periodisation), which is a principle you could definitely consider utilising at this stage of your journey. Another myth is that you MUST eat 6 meals a day. There is no reason to eat 6 meals unless you want to eat 6 meals. You can get the same results by eating 4 meals as long you stick to your daily allotted calories/macro goals. 🚨 PR DAY🚨 150kg is my new One Rep Max for Deadlifts (67kg bodyweight). To be honest, that felt pretty light so my “real, real” One Rep Max might sit closer to 160kg. But I guess it only counts what’s recorded, right? 🤪 Let’s get that to 180kg by April 👊.
