Proudly wearing my “Made by Refugees” SEARAC t-shirt and doing plenty of self reflection today for World Refugee Day as I recount my own family’s journey to freedom. The Secret War, which happened during the Vietnam War, caused the displacement of thousands of Lao people. My family included. Our motherland was a battle ground, soiled with unexploded bombs dropped by the United States.
Because of the effects of war, our history as Lao Americans has sure been rocky. But, we have the power to change our history as we take ownership of our own narratives and embrace our shared experiences. I continue to be inspired by fellow Lao American trailblazers making an impact on our community at large. Together, we can heal, uplift, and educate our folx affected by intergenerational war trauma. We got this. I will NEVER be ashamed to say I was made and am a proud daughter of LAO refugees. ✊🏼
This year’s World Refugee Day theme is #StepWithRefugees
. This campaign is focused on demonstrating to the world that the public stands with refugees, not against them. Let’s make a difference through empathy, love, advocacy, and compassion. 💓 #LAOS #LAO #SEARAC #madebyrefugees #refugees #bethechange #advocate #southeastasia #blessed #asianamerican #APIDA
