What is Anxiety?
Everyone experiences anxiety at sometime.
When people describe their anxiety, they use terms like anxious, stressed, uptight, nervous, worried. Although anxiety is an unpleasant state it can be quite useful at times to avoid dangerous situations and motivate the solving of everyday problems.
Physical signs and symptoms
Mind racing or going blank, decreased concentration and memory, indecisiveness, confusion and vivid dreams.
Feelings of unrealistic or excessive fear and worry about the past or present events, irritability, impatience, anger, feeling on edge and nervousness.
Continual avoidance of situations, obsessive or compulsive behaviour, distress in social situations, sleep disturbance, increased use of alcohol or other drugs.
Physical Symptoms include
A pounding heart, chest pains, rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing and shortness of breath. Dizziness, headaches and sweating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
The Main types of anxiety disorders are post traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia) agoraphobia, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorders
The sad thing is this illness is not spoken about in society like heart disease or cancer due to the stigmas attached with mental Illness but the fact is this illness is linked to suicide which has the 3rd largest death rate in society behind heart disease and Cancer related illness.
